San Antonio has been earnestly preparing for the four days of the NCAA Final Four event with such attention to detail, I cannot imagine anyone will leave this city disappointed.

Even with tickets starting at around $200 per person, the NCAA Final Four is sure to sell-out. If you’re not a lucky ticket holder and can’t watch the game in person, we have suggestions for where to watch the Final Four and other great televised sports. But what if you’re not into sports? Don’t worry; we won’t tell on you, and we will make sure you still have a great meal. DURING THE GAMES If you want to root for your favorite team or whichever teams are left from your tournament bracket, your best is a spot with plenty of televisions and a casual vibe that can handle an occasional cheer or groan. It’s hard to go wrong with the sports bar and game stop Dave and Buster’s at The Shops at Rivercenter. You can cheer about as loud as you want in their sports bar area, with plenty of high-definition televisions and high-end sound system. Order some shareworthy appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, meat-heavy dude food or vegetable-focused dishes and wash them down with a local craft beer or one of your better-known favorites brews. Bring the kids and let them play among the hundreds of games—or take a break from the action and act like a kid yourself. Less sports bar focused, but still sports friendly, Bar Rojo at the Grand Hyatt offers a casual yet stylish setting with some well-placed TVs to catch the action. An accessible menu of small plates complements the cocktail selection, with plenty of options for beer and wine lovers, as well. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer a view of westward view downtown and bring a warm and sophisticated ambiance to the space. Also at the Grand Hyatt, consider the underrated sports watching spot of Ruth’s Chris’s Prime Bar. It’s on the river level and offers a more elevated but not stuffy sports watching experience. Truthfully, it’s not a sports bar but is definitely sports friendly. So come for happy hour and get a Prime Burger with fries or Shrimp Voodoo at a great price, while enjoying half-price cocktails or nicely discounted glasses of wine. And since you’re getting such a good deal for happy hour, stay for the game and enjoy a little more.

BEFORE, DURING, AFTER, OR INSTEAD OF THE GAME If you’re looking for places to go either before or after you head to the Alamodome, or as an alternative to the game, the river offers plenty of dining choices. The Southwestern stylings of Boudro’s consistently rates as a favorite of visitors and locals, for a good reason. Even though it’s constantly packed, the staff here works like a well-oiled machine to offer good food, friendly and accommodating service and tableside guacamole that continues to serve as a San Antonio classic with highly coveted riverside seating.

You can never go wrong with the upscale New American stylings at Biga on the Banks, where chef/ partner Bruce Auden’s team continues to produce dishes that have been delighting fans since the original Restaurant Biga opened in 1991 north of downtown. Auden’s vision of Texas on a plate have created loyal fans who pack his restaurant. Enjoy one of his creations while overlooking the river.

For an intimate and romantic experience, consider Bella on the River, with its excellent Mediterranean-inspired menu, memorable sangria, terrific service and welcoming ambiance. Make sure to book a reservation early, because it’s small and fills up quickly. Don’t look for any televisions at Bohanan’s Prime Steaks & Seafood. Instead, celebrate a beautifully marbled cut of beef seared over a mesquite grill, meticulously crafted cocktails, impeccable service and wine selections from arguably the best sommelier in the city. If you’re in a beefy mood, consider one of downtown’s two churrascarias. At either Texas de Brazil or Fogo de Chão, guests start with a visit to a bountiful salad bar before embarking on a journey where costumed gauchos bring oversized skewers of different cuts of meat when you display a green card at your seat. When you need a break, flip it over to the red side.

There is a TV in the bar area of Ácenar, but that’s rarely the focus of the attention in this space. Instead, get a table overlooking the river and order some duck chalupas or classic green enchiladas while sipping on an easydrinking margarita or cold Mexican beer.

Or experience the Italian menu at Zocca in the Westin Riverwalk, either on the river banks or among the limestone columns and walls. There is a TV in the bar area if you just have to watch one of the games, but that’s not the main attraction of this place. Whether you’re looking for a place to watch the games or to take a break from them, the river offers plenty of tasty options.

A family that plays together will also be much healthier by simply going outside. Exposure to the sun provides Vitamin D that strengthens the immune system and makes bones grow stronger. It also releases endorphins, that raise and stabilize everyone’s mood. Children who spend time outside are less likely to develop myopia (nearsightedness). Going outside even has been found to reduce symptoms of attention deficit disorder.

FAST AND FREEWHEELIN’ Not sure where to start an outdoor adventure? Why not grab your bikes and hit the road? Bicycling is a healthy outdoor activity the entire family can enjoy together. Children develop strength, balance and overall fitness while getting to know their community and feel part of it. In fact, many teachers report that kids who ride their bikes to school are more alert and ready to learn than those who arrive by car. Cycling strengthens the heart, lungs, lower-body muscles, bones and is a great, low-impact exercise for strengthening the muscles surrounding the knees. Riding a bike firms the thighs and bottom, and can even help tone the tummy muscles and a 20-minute ride burns between 100-200 calories. Brackenridge Park located less than 4 miles from downtown and Hemisfair Park in the heart of downtown both have beautiful bike trails to explore, or sightsee downtown on two-wheels. Tour San Antonio’s historic missions by bike using the eight-mile-long mission portals that connect all four missions - Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan and Espada. No bike? No problem! Rent one from a BCycle station located throughout the greater downtown area. All you have to do is thesanantonioriverwalk.com

walk up to any BCycle station and let the directions guide you step-by-step to pay with a credit card. If you are a local or visit often, consider a membership purchased online. And since biking burns calories, you can enjoy a guilt-free, post-ride treat with the kids.

HOLE-IN-ONE FUN With spring in full swing, the perfect March weather is ideal for a round of golf (the average temperature is between 71 and 76 degrees). Golfing is a great way to get fit with your family, spend time outdoors, and kids can learn patience, etiquette and the honor system while TopGolf keeping score. Golfing burns about 600 calories per hour (ditch the golf cart) and is a great opportunity for families to spend a day together giving each other encouragement and support. An alternative to outdoor courses on a rainy day or after sunset is the indoor greens at Topgolf San Antonio. Tee-up in a climate-controlled hitting bay. FINAL FOUR FAMILY FUN After fighting this winter’s powerful flu as a family, why not catch some March Madness together? The last weekend of March (Friday, March 30, through Monday, April 2) is full of free Final Four fun for the whole family. During Final Four Fan Fest at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center spend Final Four weekend in a sports wonderland of interactive games, special celebrity and athlete appearances, autograph signings and much more. Fan Fest is so much more than basketball. Knock it out-of-the-park at Home Run Derby, participate in one of the free cheer clinics taking place over the weekend or make your way over to the rock wall and climb to the top to get a birds-eye view of the entire event. You will even have a chance to snap a selfie with the championship trophy. On Final Four Friday, check out the inside of the Alamodome decked-out for the games and see each of the Final Four teams in their final open

practice before Saturday’s national semifinal games. Each team will practice for one hour. Then stick around for the Reese’s Collegiate All-Star Game in the afternoon to see the top senior players in the nation play on the Final Four court. The Final Four Dribble on Sunday at the Institute of Texan Cultures is a free event for 18 and under crowd. Thousands of young fans are invited to dribble their way through the heart of downtown San Antonio. Registration is open to the first 3,000 participants, and they will all receive an NCAA Dribble T-shirt, a custom Wilson basketball and free entry into Final Four Fan Fest.

Just north of downtown, the Museum Reach, enriched by fantastic contemporary art installations and intricate land and waterscaping, extends to the San Antonio Museum of Art and the spectacular Pearl Complex, a stunningly reconfigured historic brewery and home to the Culinary Institute of America’s Southwest campus. It’s also the hottest residential market in town, and a bustling home to scores of upscale restaurants, boutiques and bars.

cutting-edge galleries, a craft brewery, performance space and funky warehouse apartments, it was uber-hip from the start. Edgy artists created futuristic studio residences there. The Blue Star was the place to live on the wild side. The NBA’s most eccentric star, then-S.A. Spurs player Dennis Rodman, commissioned a loft complete with indoor parking for his Harley-Davidson. How cool is that?

On the flip side of downtown, though, south of the River Bend, a new, less-well known epicenter of some of the hippest, most engaging art, architecture, and The world-famous San Antonio food and drink is bursting with vibrant River Walk has long centered energy. The Blue Star on the hot, happening River Complex shares quite a few elements with Bend area in the very heart of the Pearl. Located just across the river south of the city’s downtown. Rodman has moved on, and so has Blue Star, as Southtown and the urban-cool “SoFlo” (for South Flores Street) neighborhood undergo a continuing renaissance. Gentrification has set in slowly, and many of the wilder, more creative and edgy elements of this area remain, as the eclectic “creative class” flocks to the Blue Star area.

The daring developers billed it as San Antonio’s SoHo, home to Blue Star Contemporary, heralded as the city’s first internationallyknown museum devoted to the most modern of modern art. With

Blue Star Contemporary is still the anchor tenant here, and a mustsee stop for arts aficionados interested in the newest classics of contemporary. Don’t miss the “Cross Currents” exhibits on display this spring – fascinating interpretations of specific years in San Antonio’s 300-year history created by local artists. (Different artists’ work for the project can be seen at many galleries and other spaces around town, with openings throughout the year.) Wendell White’s powerful Manifest project is another of the museum’s must-see shows up this spring.

But there’s a whole world in the narrow passages and alleyways of the area. Contemporary arts aficionados, folk art connoisseurs, adventurous diners, craft beer lovers, dilettantes of gelato and even bicycling adventurers will find plenty to occupy a day or a week at Blue Star. There’s a surprise around every corner. The Salon, for instance, adjacent to Cinnabar Gallery, looks like a very exclusive spa at first glance, and turns out to be a very high-end framing shop. Cinnabar itself is the

height of elegant cool, from exquisite art jewelry to exhibitions of breathtaking, sometimes whimsical, up-and-coming artists and sculptors. Downstairs and around a corner, check out the wild and crazy wall space outside “Cali-Texas” artist Robert Tatum’s Choice Goods retail space. Tatum brought together more than a dozen cool artists from around the country to collaborate on the graffiti-style mural titled “Birds of a Feather,” (You’ll see why.) Inside, Tatum shares details of his copious work, from originals to prints and even post cards. San Antonio has long been a hot spot for lovers of colorful, imaginative folk art. At San Angel Gallery, owner Hank Lee has assembled one of the most glorious collections of folk, outsider and visionary art from Mexico, the Southwest and beyond. One of the first businesses in Blue Star, San Angel celebrates 30 years this year, and Lee is still going strong. His stories of the artists and the works he carries can keep you fascinated all day long. Check out his latest addition – a collection of handmade guayaberas, made only for the store in carefully curated vintage fabrics. Fabric artist Jane Bishop’s Mockingbird Hand Prints offers a completely different, but equally delightful, assortment of artful creations, from hand painted tin jewelry and handdyed or painted fabrics and garments to elegant ceramics, prints, paintings and various eclectic furnishings. There are many more artful spaces to explore, but by this time the visitor is working up a thirst, and maybe a little appetite. Joey Villarreal’s Blue Star Brewing Company, another of the longest-running tenants, offers a tempting array of house brewskis, including Texican Lager and Cowtown Mild Brown, and a comfort food menu featuring locally-sourced, healthy fare. Behind the warm, wood dining space and bar, the shiny brewing works nestle behind two stories of glass, while the open upstairs seating is graced by dozens of wall-mounted bicycles – a testament to the early days, and a nod to Villarreal’s other Blue Star business, his bike shop a few doors down. Up for coffee or an exquisitely tasty snack? Check out Josh Biffle’s South Alamode.Gelato and Panini store. Biffle, who picked up his culinary skills and refined tastes as a fledgling architect in Northern Italy, can wax poetic about the pistachios he imports from the slopes of Mount Etna for his gelato, or the secrets of porcini mushrooms, or the makings of his popular Contadino Panini, featuring

fennel Salami, shaved pear Josh Biffle at and his special fennel and South Alamode raisin marmalade. For a different dining experience, check out Sukeban’s quiet Japanese elegance, or rock out at Joe’s Blues or Bar 1919. Or get yourself a big fat cup of caffeine at Halcyon coffee shop and bar. That should pump you up to rent a bike, or check out the hourlyrental B-Cycle stand in the parking lot for a pedal along the beautifully wildscaped Mission Reach, and the UNESCO World Heritage-designated Spanish Missions. And while you’re taking side trips, take a little jaunt back up South Alamo Street for a stop at Garcia Art Glass (conveniently located, for your additional dining pleasure, next to the colorful, delicious Latin restaurant Azuca.) More than 10 percent of the United States’ population is of Irish descent, according to U.S. Census Data. In San Antonio, a city of more than 1.5 million people, that means almost 160,000 of its citizens could have a Murphy, Kelly, O’Sullivan, Walsh, O’Brien, Connolly, Donovan, O’Neill, Flynn, Gallagher, Kennedy, Lynch, or Quinn in their family history. For those who don’t, it doesn’t matter because everyone is an honorary Irishman St. Patrick’s Day. The River City is internationally known for its annual celebration of the Emerald Isle, even going so far as to dye its river green and rename it the River Shannon. This year’s river dyeing is held on March 16 and 17 at 1 p.m. each day thanks to the good folks at Maddogs Britsh Pub. Dueling bagpipers will herald the dye boat through downtown starting outside their restaurant. The two-day festival filled with Irish music, a potato eating contest, pretty knees contest plus a parade on Saturday, March 17, at 4 p.m. The 14 floats start at the Homewood Suites and traveling past the Drury Plaza, Aztec Theatre, Hyatt Hotel, Shops at Rivercenter, Convention Center, and the Arneson River Theatre. The Texas State Historical Association writes that the Irish in San Antonio and South Texas date back to Spanish colonization. Dublin native Hugo O’Connor was interim governor of Texas and laid Mission San José’s cornerstone. Fray Juan Agustin Morfi (Murphy) wrote one of the earliest histories of San Antonio in 1777. Twelve Irish-born soldiers died defending the Alamo in 1836. Fourteen with Irish surnames also perished in the battle. Approximately 100 Irish-born fought in the Battle of San Jacinto. Melinda Britten, president of the Harp & Shamrock Society, says she has learned so much history and so much about her own family from being a part of this active, 300-member group that has awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships since its beginning. The organization’s original members placed the first memorial wreath at the Alamo in 1967 to honor those who fought and died there. This year’s ceremony on Saturday, March 17, at noon, will be their 51st year to do so.

Bstations are strategically located throughout the city, so you could just grab one at the streetlevel station on Crockett Street. But if you want to do even a small part of the 20 mile Mission Trail, it’s best to park at one of the missions and take one of the bikes from there. BCycle offers an all-access pass to any of the bikes along with their trails. You simply pay for a pass at the station or on the app, and you have access to the bikes for an hour at a time. If you’d like to stop along the trail be sure to deposit your bike while you explore so you’re not charged overage fees. Then grab a new bike and head out to the next mission. I recommend starting in the middle at Mission San Jose since the visitor’s center there has exhibits

and a short video about the missions. Then choosing a north or south route to explore. After you complete your mission, circle back around to your car and head just up the street for lunch at Nicha’s Comida Mexicana. Carnivores can get down on some of the best carne guisada in the area, while veggie lovers pretend the cheese enchiladas are a salad. Each dish is served with zero calories if you show your BCycle receipt. Finish the Day: Wrap up your San Antonio adventure with an evening stroll down the river. If you took it easy at lunch, stop by County Line BBQ for their infamous barbecue ribs. Or split a five meat plate for a sampler experience. Then head over to Durty Nelly’s for a raucous night of cocktails and singalongs. During St. Patrick’s Day the river is dyed green, and festivities are rocking. But if you just want to celebrate like the Irish on a Friday night, Durty Nelly’s is the place. With stories, jokes and piano shenanigans, it’s a great way to round out your March day in SA.

Spring Break will also feature Wild Days with celebrity wildlife experts like Jack Hanna. The best admission deal is the GOLD pass for $109, which offers access to both SeaWorld and Aquatica, free parking, free passes for friends and family and discounts in the parks. You’ll want to grab a quick lunch in the park because SeaWorld is a full-day experience. Finish the Day: If you’re wrecked from the park, grab a quick pie for dinner at Pizzarita’s and call it a night. But if you’re ready to stay up late with the big kids, head over for dinner and games at Dave & Buster’s downtown. They’ll be hopping during March Madness, but with dinner and game card deals for less than $20, it’s worth a quick power nap before you put your game face on.

EAT: Carl Hilmar Guenther’s first flour mill in San Antonio sat along the river across from King William Street, adjacent to his home, and on the grounds of the present day Pioneer Flour Mills. It was a meeting place for the German community, so it should be no surprise that today the Guenther House serves as one of the best places in town for biscuits and gravy. Start your day with a historical stroll through the museum on site, then fill your spirit and your belly with a strawberry waffle in the Guenther House restaurant. Pro tip: Ask to add bananas. They’re a strawberry’s best friend. PLAY: Continue your cultural tour with a day at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. They’ll be celebrating opening night of a new artist exhibition at the end of the month, but year-round they’re home to more than 74 of the country’s top Western artists. The building, which was originally the first San Antonio Public Library, was

beautifully restored and is home to relics like Pancho Villa’s last known saddle. The museum also has a partnership with Casa Rio, so bring your Briscoe sticker to the restaurant for 10 percent off your bill. Or bring your Casa Rio receipt to the Briscoe for half off admission. FINISH THE DAY: If your feet need a rest after a full three days of activity, you’ll want to roll with Scooter Power Tours. The company caters to family, and is one of the only places in town that allows kids as young as 4 to ride. Tour fees start at $50 per person for two hour routes, and tagalongs are only $15. The fee includes a helmet, knee and elbow pads, water bottle, sunscreen, a locker and photos of your tour. There are tours at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. that go downtown, to Mission Concepcion, or to the Japanese Tea Gardens. However the best way to round out a San Antonio vacay during the Tricentennial celebration is a nighttime tour to see The Saga. The ride begins at 7:30 with a leisurely tour of the city, and it culminates with a breathtaking show at the Main Plaza. San Antonio | The Saga is an incredible light show displayed on the facade of the San Fernando Cathedral. The dancing lights depict the epic history of Texas, and it’s hard not to feel moved by the music and the incredible journey. When your city turns 300, you skip the candles and opt for a brilliant artistic light display in the heart of Downtown San Antonio.

“Moses Rose had fought at the Alamo for ten days, and now with 6,000 Mexican troops surrounding them, Col. Travis drew a line in the sand and said, “I now want every man who is determined to stay here and die with me to come across this line.” Moses Rose thought about it...certain death...or... escape to a little building on the River Walk to eat cheesy Nachos topped with smoked Brisket and wash it all down with a frozen Margarita while listening to live music? Ya...Moses Rose found a Hideout...and so did you!” Moses Rose’s Hideout was born by the desire of owner, Vince Cantu to have a sports bar with a prohibition entry located downtown. After noticing many of these fun, prohibition type “secret entry” type bars open throughout the country, Vince was determined to open one without all of the haute cocktail culture, but instead one that could operate as a part bar, part family-friendly restaurant, located downtown, in a popular area. Knowing that one of the only survivors of the Alamo was Moses Rose, who fled after fighting alongside his friend James Bowie for ten days, and fought for Texas Independence for ten years, Vince thought: How did Moses Rose elude the 5,000 Mexican troops surrounding the Alamo? He must have had a Hideout. Not knowing whether Moses had a Hideout or not, Vince decided to make one up and designed it with a prohibition entry. Moses Rose’s Hideout opened in 2010 and has become a great place to eat and have a cold

beer or Margarita while watching the big game on one of the TV’s, but also to hear live music or a DJ during the late-night party hours. The craft beer menu consists of many Texas-brewed beers and all of the favorite Mexican brands. If you enjoy distilled spirits, the bar features many of the best Texas Spirits available, such as locally distilled Ranger Creek and Rebecca Creek. Vince took over a 100-year-old building that had layers of improvements to strip off. The old brick was exposed as was a beautiful antique tin ceiling dating to the late 1800’s. After adding the kitchen and the bar, he added the prohibition entry idea. “I wanted to make it fun, not obnoxious,” he said. “It’s a lighthearted take on what makes San Antonio great: our history, our food, and our playful nature,” adding “I’ll sit facing the TV’s and a customer will be hula hooping on the next screen. You can’t not watch. It never gets old.” Vince’s grandparents started a Mexican restaurant and operated it for over 60 years downtown. “I love downtown. I grew up here, and I was stoked to have the opportunity to open up Moses Rose’s Hideout on Houston Street. “It’s been a fantastic journey, and a great business.” Moses Rose’s most famous hula-hooper? “I’d have to say, Flaco Jimenez. He played here after Fiesta with the Texmaniacs. It was a great show, but Flaco’s fun nature was puro San Antonio”.

The old wood-framed house with the tin roof, now home to Guillermo’s Italian restaurant, is both cozy and friendly. Mouth-watering smells of warm focaccia bread waft through the air upon arrival. In addition to traditional Italian offerings like pizza, shrimp scampi, and Italian cold cut sandwiches, the menu features numerous Mexican and Italian fusion cuisines like huevos rancheros pizza and Texas lasagna.
